Golden Eagles Fall To Concordia In Extra Innings

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s baseball team worked extra and then some, but wound up with a disappointing loss to show for it.

The Golden Eagles battled back from an early 6-2 deficit, only to see Concordia score nine runs in the 10th inning to pull out a 17-8 victory Tuesday in a non-conference game at Reeder Field. Cal State L.A. (10-15) dropped its second straight non-conference game to an NAIA opponent.

Darrick Hale hit his eighth home run of the season for the Golden Eagles, while Tyler Warmerdam had two hits and two RBI, Joe Park had two hits and two runs scored and Kenny Shanahan had two hits and two runs scored.

Concordia (9-9) pounded out 20 hits, including a grand slam home run by Cody Kissell, a three-run shot in the 10th inning by Matt Ross and a two-run home run by Dante Beltramo. Kissell and Ross drove in four runs each, Beltramo drove in three runs and leadoff hitter Gregg Davidson had three hits, scored three times and drove in a pair.

Jason Scheumann worked three scoreless innings for Concordia to get the win, while Nathan Pickett suffered the loss after lasting only one-third of an inning in the 10th.

Yuichiro Fujiwara pitched well for the Golden Eagles, allowing only four hits and a run over four innings. Devon Ramirez allowed only an unearned run over two innings and Nico Moreno tossed a scoreless inning for Cal State L.A.

A leadoff home run by Hale and a run-scoring double by Warmerdam staked the Golden Eagles to a 2-1 lead after one inning. Concordia, though, got a home run by Beltramo to tie the game in the second inning and then took a 6-2 lead later in the inning after Kissell's grand slam.

The Golden Eagles got single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to make it 6-4 before Concordia got a run in the top of the sixth to make it 7-4.

Cal State L.A. then took an 8-7 lead by scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Park had a run-scoring single and Warmerdam had a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 7-6 and then took the lead when Contreras beat out an infield single to drive in one run and Park came around to score on an error.

Concordia sent the game into extra innings with an unearned run in the eighth and then broke the game open with nine runs in the 10th. Beltramo punched a single down the right-field line to score two runs and break the tie. Justin Baeza had a two-run single up the middle and Davidson had a two-run single to stretch the lead to 14-8 and Ross' three-run home run completed the scoring.

Cal State L.A. will resume California Collegiate Athletic Association action with a four-game series against Cal State Dominguez Hills beginning Thursday with a single game in Carson.
